Once upon a time, a respected sage named Dev Sharma lived in a village temple. Everyone in the village respected him. He received various kinds of clothes, gifts, food items and money as donations from his devotees. By selling those clothes, the sage had collected a lot of money.
The sage never trusted anyone and was always worried about the safety of his wealth. He kept his money in a bundle and always carried it with him.
A swindler lived in the same village. He had his eyes on the sage's wealth for a long time. The swindler always followed the sage, but the sage never let the bundle go away from him.
Short Story in English with Moral
Finally, the swindler disguised himself as a student and went to the sage. He requested the sage to make him his disciple as he wanted to acquire knowledge. The sage agreed and thus the swindler started living in the temple with the sage.
The swindler used to do all the work from cleaning the temple to other works. The swindler served the sage very well and soon became his confidant.
One day the sage was invited to a nearby village for a ritual. The sage accepted the invitation and on the appointed day the sage set out with his disciple to participate in the ritual.
Short Story in English with Moral
On the way, they came across a river and the sage expressed his wish to take a bath. He kept the bundle of money inside a blanket and placed it on the bank of the river. He asked the swindler to guard the goods and went to take a bath himself. The swindler had been waiting for this moment for a long time. As soon as the sage went to take a dip in the river, the swindler ran away with the bundle of money.
Moral: One should not trust a stranger just because he talks sweetly.
