A Smoky Challenge: Tenali Raman's Ingenious Solution

The court of King Krishnadev Rai was in session. The king was busy in some discussion with his courtiers. Suddenly, a discussion started on cleverness and intelligence. From courtiers to Rajguru, everyone in the court of King Krishnadev was annoyed with Tenaliram. With the intention of humiliating Tenaliram, a minister stood up and said – Maharaj! There is no dearth of intelligent and clever people in your court. If given an opportunity, we too can prove our intelligence, but?

“But what, Minister?” asked King Krishnadev in surprise. The Commander stood up from his seat and said – I will tell you, Maharaj! What the Minister wants to say. No courtier is given priority to prove his ability in front of Tenaliram. In every matter, Tenaliram puts himself forward and takes the credit for his cleverness. Until others get the opportunity, how will he prove his ability? After listening to the Commander, the King understood that all the courtiers are against Tenaliram. The King became quiet for a few moments and started thinking. Then his eyes fell on the incense stick burning in front of the temple, after seeing the incense stick, the King got an idea to test all the courtiers.

He immediately said – you all will definitely be given an opportunity to prove your ability. And till you all prove your ability, Tenaliram will also not come in between. Hearing this, all the courtiers were very happy. Okay Maharaj! Tell us what we have to do. The king pointed towards the incense stick and said – I want two hands long smoke. Whoever courtier can do this will be considered more intelligent and clever than Tenaliram. Hearing King Krishnadev's words, all the courtiers started whispering among themselves that what kind of foolish act is this. Can smoke ever be measured? One by one, all the courtiers started measuring the smoke using their own tricks. Someone tried to measure the smoke in both hands, but the smoke would come out of the hands and go upwards waving. Everyone tried their best but no one could give two hands long smoke to the Maharaj.

When all the courtiers got tired and sat down, one courtier said – Maharaj! Measuring the smoke is an impossible task in our view. Yes, if Tenaliram is able to do this, then we will consider him smarter than us. But if he is not able to do this, then you will consider him equal to all of us. The king smiled slightly and said – Why Tenali! Do you accept this challenge? Tenaliram got up from his place and bowed his head and said – Maharaj, I have always followed your orders. I will definitely do it this time too.
