The foolish Crocodile and the clever Monkey

A monkey lived on a Mango tree on the bank of a river. That tree bore very sweet mangoes. One day a crocodile came to near the tree in search of food. When the monkey asked him, he told the reason for his visit. The monkey told that very sweet mangoes grow here and he gave those mangoes to the crocodile. He became friends with the crocodile living in the river. That monkey kept giving mangoes to that crocodile to eat every day.

One day that crocodile fed some mangoes to his wife too. After eating the delicious mangoes, thinking that the heart of the person who eats such sweet fruits every day would also be very sweet, she told her husband that she wanted the heart of that monkey and she insisted on this. She made an excuse of illness and said that she would be able to live only when she gets the heart of the monkey.

Forced by the insistence of his wife, the crocodile played a trick and told the monkey that his sister-in-law wants to meet him. The monkey said that how can he go into the river? The crocodile suggested that the crocodile should sit on his back so that he could reach his home safely.

The monkey also believed his friend, jumped from the tree into the river and sat on his back. When they reached the middle of the river, the crocodile thought that now there is no harm in telling the monkey the truth and he revealed the secret that his wife wants to eat his heart. The monkey was heartbroken, he was shocked, but he did not lose his patience.

The monkey said quickly, “Oh my friend, why did you not tell me this before because I have kept my heart safe in the Mango tree. Now quickly take me back to the river bank so that I can bring my heart and gift it to my sister-in-law and make her happy.”

As soon as the foolish crocodile brought the monkey to the river bank, the monkey jumped forcefully on the Mango tree and said angrily, “Fool, can anyone live without a heart? Go, from today our friendship is over.”

Moral: 1. One should not lose patience in times of trouble.

2. One should make friendship with a stranger after careful consideration.
